Kelly A. James Policy Officer Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation |
Kelly is a Policy Officer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She manages the Foundation's state education policy/advocacy efforts and investments in the Midwestern region. Prior to her role at the Gates Foundation, she was an attorney at Karr Tuttle Campbell, focusing her practice in school law and labor/employment litigation.
Kelly served as the founding Executive Director of Chicago SCORES, a nonprofit organization providing after-school soccer and creative writing activities for public school students. Additionally, as Senior Program Officer for Leadership and Capacity Building for the Steans Family Foundation, Kelly led a grassroots grant-making initiative for community members and youth to improve the social and economic quality of life in the North Lawndale neighborhood on Chicago's west side.
Kelly received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the College of Wooster in Ohio and her Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago.
